Ralph Stile
Few individuals leave a lasting imprint on a school district the way Raffaele "Ralph" Stile did. A beloved educator, principal, Board of Education member, mentor, outdoorsman and friend, Stile passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026, at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy that spans generations of the Sachem community.

Born on March 21, 1936, in Lynbrook, New York, Stile was the only child of Sam and Vera (Drahos) Stile. A standout athlete, he graduated from Freeport High School and signed to play minor league baseball in the New York Giants organization. An early injury redirected his path toward education, a decision that would profoundly shape thousands of lives.

Stile attended SUNY Oswego, where he earned his teaching degree in 1959 while starring on the Oswego Lakers basketball team. It was there he met his first wife, Janet Flugger. Shortly after graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Augsburg, Germany, where the couple welcomed their first daughter before eventually returning to Long Island to begin their family and his career in education.

In 1966, Stile joined the Sachem Central School District as an elementary school teacher at Lynwood Avenue Elementary School. His natural leadership, compassion and unwavering commitment to children soon led him into administration, where he served with distinction as principal of both Lynwood Avenue and Nokomis Elementary Schools.

Even after retiring as an administrator, Stile's commitment to Sachem never wavered. He continued serving the community through multiple terms on the Sachem Board of Education, always placing students and families at the center of every decision.

Outside of school, Stile found his greatest joy in the outdoors. A lifelong conservationist, he spent countless hours boating, fishing, duck hunting, kayaking, camping, birding and exploring the waterways and woodlands of Long Island, the Adirondacks and Florida. Whether captaining his boat across the Great South Bay or guiding family and friends through Gottfried Creek and Lemon Bay in Florida, he inspired those around him to appreciate and protect the natural world.

His love for nature became one of his greatest gifts to future generations.

Stile remained active throughout his life, playing basketball for decades and proudly competing in the New York Empire State Senior Games.

His daughter, Terri Stile, perhaps captured his legacy best.

"My father was truly a singular and special person who impacted many lives," she said. "His legacy will live on in their hearts for the way he made them feel, the ways in which he helped them, his generosity of spirit and time, and his funny, but gentle, sense of humor."

Ralph Stile is survived by his partner, Linda Marlowe; his daughters, Terri Stile, Kim Dembek and Karen Stile; his stepdaughters, Monica Saleh and Melissa Albrecht; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and countless former students, colleagues and friends whose lives were enriched by his example.

For the Sachem community, Stile's legacy extends far beyond the schools he led or the offices he held. It lives on in every student he inspired, every educator he mentored, every family he supported and every life he quietly made better.

He will be remembered not only as an outstanding educator and leader, but as one of the true gentlemen in Sachem's history, a man whose kindness, integrity and dedication helped define what it means to serve a community.
